Full details at this link.

Neighbourhood Watch

In November, a number of members of the community went round to all the houses in the neighbourhood to ask people whether they were interested in setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. 85 households were supportive of the idea (there are about 200 houses althogether, although not all are occupied) - of the rest, most didn't respond.

As a result of this we invited the community gardaí to a meeting where a Neighbourhood Watch committee was set up.

Everybody has now received a sticker to place in their windows: please do this, as it sends a positive message that we really care about the area.

South Circular Road Garden

Right around the corner from our neighbourhood, there's a community garden where we city dwellers can get in touch with nature. Absolutely anybody can get involved, and it's a great place to learn how to grow things, make the city beautiful, and end up with fruit and vegetables you grew yourself.

The garden is run by volunteers, who regularly write (and post photos) about it here: http://southcirculargarden.blogspot.com/

If you're interested in getting involved, keep an eye on their blog to see details of meetings and plans; or drop down any weekend. New gardeners are always welcome.

Dublin Food Co-Op

Those of us who live in Cork Street Buildings are just five minutes walk from the Dublin Food Co-Op. The co-op was set up in 1983, but it moved to Newmarket Square a couple of years ago. So this is a Dublin institution right beside our community.

You can find more details here: http://www.dublinfood.coop, including a map and directions.

The co-op runs a weekly food market on Thursdays (2PM-8PM) and Saturdays (9.30AM-4.30PM), where stalls provide fresh local and artisan produce, mainly organic, and other products for sustainable living. You'll find organic fruit and veg, fairly traded clothes, 2nd hand books and delicious baked things; as well as great spots for coffee and a chat.

Managing your household waste

Working out the rubbish system can be confusing. Here's a simple outline of what rubbish goes in which bins, and when they get collected.

You can get tags for the black bins in the Centra on Cork St, and most newsagents around the city. If you receive social welfare or you're on a low income, you may be eligible for a bin waiver.

Local Councillors

As you may be aware, local elections take place in 2009. The council has a big role to play in our lives, from collecting rubbish to providing activities for the kids; so it's well worth keeping in touch with our representatives.

We're members of Dublin South Central, and our ward is South West Inner City. All current councillors are visible here.

The councillors for our ward at present are:
John Gallagher - Labour
Críona Ní Dhalaigh - Sinn Fein
Clare Byrne - Fine Gael

All three of these will be running for office again next year. In addition, the following candidates will also be running:
Martin Hogan - Green Party
Catherine Ardagh - Fianna Fail

We'll continue to update you on political developments in the area.

Welcome

Welcome to the blog for the Cork Street Buildings residents' group.  Cork Street Buildings refers to Cameron Street, Eugene Street, Fingal Street, Maxwell Street and Darley's Terrace - off Cork Street in Dublin 8.

Here's a map of the streets:-

This blog is supplemented by a Google Group - which you can sign up to here.

The intention behind this community group is fourfold:-
  1. To identify and solve local issues.
  2. To work together to make improvements to the area
  3. To help the residents of the area to get to know one another.
  4. To provide a unified point of contact for Dublin City Council and local politicians.
